In a large pot, fill cold water a few inches below the top. Add the chicken, garlic and cut in half the carrots, parsnips, and celery. Add those in too. Stick the cloves in the onion a put it in the pot.
Bring to a boil and then let simmer for two hours with the lid on. Take the cover off and let simmer for another two hours or until the volume has reduced by one third.
Take out everything, with a slotted spoon and save. Throw in some parsley and dill to the shop and bring to a boil again. Take out the parsley and dill and throw away.
Add a couple of tablespoons of chicken soup powder.
Slice up the carrots and pit back into the soup.
Take the chicken off the bone and place back into the soup.
You can put the suit back into the fridge or serve.
