Sticky Toffee Pudding

Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 8 ounces dried pitted dates (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • For the Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 1/3 cups (packed) dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup whisky (or substitute more heavy cream)
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest, from 1 orange (optional)
