Savoury Mince

Ingredients

  • • 1 kg beef mince
  • • 1 large brown onion, finely diced
  • • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • • 2 tbsp plain flour (for thickening)
  • • 2 cups (500ml) water
  • • 2 beef stock cubes (or 2 tsp stock powder)
  • • 1–1½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • • ½–1 tsp black pepper

Directions

  1. 1. Cook the onion
  2. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and cook for ~5 minutes until soft and slightly golden.
  4. 2. Brown the mince
  5. Add the mince, breaking it up with a spoon.
  6. Cook until fully browned and no pink remains.
  7. 3. Add flour
  8. Sprinkle over the flour and stir through the mince.
  9. Cook for 1–2 minutes — this removes the raw flour taste.
  10. 4. Add liquids & seasoning
  11. Gradually pour in the water while stirring (prevents lumps).
  12. Add stock cubes, salt, pepper, and optional Worcestershire/tomato paste.
  13. 5. Simmer
  14. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
