#Tarka Dal

Ingredients

  • FOR THE DAL
  • 1/2 cup red lentils rinsed
  • 1/4 cup chana dal or yellow split peas rinsed
  • 2 1/4 cups water (maybe more if you want it more watery)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp grated garlic
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1 Serrano pepper thin sliced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • FOR THE TARKA
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion sliced lengthwise
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp onion seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tomato diced or a handful of cherry tomatoes sliced in half
  • salt
  • GARNISH
  • 1 handful of fresh cilantro leaves, chopped as garnish
  • Sliced Serrano chili
  • Serve with rice
